Autumn Afternoon near Halton
Watercolour. Signed and dated 1895.
This fine, early watercolour represents an important chapter in Birch’s life and development as an artist. He spent most of his teenage years working for an industrial company in Manchester but, at the age of 19, was relocated by his employers for health reasons to their premises at Halton in the Lancashire countryside. Here, the idyllic surroundings suited his growing ambition to become a full-time painter of landscapes. It was at Halton that Birch painted his first Royal Academy exhibit and, even after settling in Cornwall and adopting the name Lamorna, he returned regularly to the area.
