Plymouth Sound from Mount Wise
Watercolour and bodycolour. Signed.
The historically strategic site of Mount Wise affords a glorious view across Plymouth Sound towards Mount Edgcumbe and the sheltered deep water anchorage of Barn Pool. On the left is the famous Royal William victualling yard. Built between 1825 and 1835 as the supply stores for the Royal Navy, this was one of the most important industrial complexes in the country.

HMS Undaunted at Anchor off Mount Edgcumbe

The 38-gun Royal Navy frigate HMS Undaunted was launched in October 1807 and served during the Napoleonic Wars. She was the vessel which, in the spring of 1814, took Napoleon from Fréjus in the South of France to exile on the Mediterranean island of Elba. She is depicted flying The Ensign of The White Squadron, at anchor in the sheltered deep waters of Barn Pool off Mount Edgcumbe.

The Stable Yard
Pencil. Signed with initials.
Provenance: Private collection. Original illustration for "Mayfly - the Grey Pony" by Eleanor Helme, published in 1935. Inscribed: “… the farmer and his son rode in, leading …”. This drawing features the famous 1930s racehorse, Brown Jack. He ranks as one of the greatest thoroughbreds of all time, having won 25 races between 1929 and 1934, including the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Ascot in each of those six years.
