The historically strategic site of Mount Wise affords a glorious view across Plymouth Sound towards Mount Edgcumbe and the sheltered deep water anchorage of Barn Pool. On the left is the famous Royal William victualling yard. Built between 1825 and 1835 as the supply stores for the Royal Navy, this was one of the most important industrial complexes in the country.

1920s printed advertisement for James Buchanan Black & White Whisky.
Maud Earl became famous during the Victorian Era for her accurate portrayal of dog breeds. She was born in London into a family of artists and, from a young age, was taught to draw and paint by her father. Her work won wide international recognition. She exhibited at The Royal Academy and developed a select clientèle, including Queen Victoria and other members of the Royal Family.
