Hide and Seek
Oil on canvas. Signed with monogram.
Like several members of the Newlyn School, Fortescue was born and grew up in Birmingham, where he worked as an engineering designer before deciding to become a professional artist. He studied in Paris and Venice and moved to Newlyn in the mid-1880s, sharing lodgings with Stanhope Forbes. In 1894, he moved to St. Ives, where he remained for the rest of his life.
